What happens when you lose every key to your car?
More than 95 percent of new North American passenger vehicles had an engine immobilizer as of 2014, according to Locksmith Ledger, and the average U.S. passenger car was 14.5 years old in 2025, per S&P Global Mobility data reported by Repairer Driven News. So most cars on the road need a key matched to the car's computer, not just cut.
All keys lost (AKL) means no working key is left to copy or reprogram from. An immobilizer is a security check between the key and the engine. The key carries a small chip, and the car won't start until it recognizes that chip.
So why does that matter to you? Because a hardware store can't fix this. A new key has to be matched to your car's computer. The good news is that matching a key without an original is routine work for an automotive locksmith, and it doesn't depend on finding the old key first.
What do you need to bring to get a replacement key?
Ford asks for a valid driver's license, state photo ID or passport, plus proof of ownership such as a registration, insurance card, title or bill of sale. Our 4-Document Check applies the same idea to any make: photo ID, proof the car is yours, the VIN, and your location.
Anyone who makes you a key should confirm the car is yours first, and that includes our lost key replacement visits. Other makes vary, so confirm before you go. Here is the 4-Document Check in full:
| # | What to have ready | What counts | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Photo ID | Driver's license, state ID, or passport | Must be current |
| 2 | Proof the car is yours | Registration, title, or insurance card | The name should match your ID |
| 3 | The VIN | Listed on your registration, title or insurance card | Photograph it if you can |
| 4 | Your location | Street address or the nearest landmark | Tells us where to come |
What if your registration or title was on the key ring that's now gone? Delaware has a path for that. The Delaware DMV handles a duplicate title on form MV213, and every owner on the title must sign. If there's a lien, the lienholder completes a section of the form too. A duplicate registration card requires proof of insurance and your plate number.
A duplicate title takes mailing time, so don't wait on it. Proof of insurance can sometimes stand in for a missing registration card, but ask the locksmith what they accept before you order anything.
If your paperwork was on the lost key ring, we match your photo ID to the VIN on the car and to a record you can pull up that shows your name with that VIN, and we do that before we make a key.
How is a new car key made when you have no original?
A replacement key starts with the VIN, not an old key, as our car key replacement jobs begin. The locksmith verifies ownership, identifies the key, cuts or orders it, programs it to the immobilizer, and tests it. Some makes need more: Volkswagen's tech tip calls for a new control module on 2024 to 2026 Atlas, GTI and Golf R models.
The vehicle identification number tells the locksmith the exact key type, the chip, and the programming method your car uses. From there the work follows a set order.
- Verify ownership. Photo ID plus proof the car is yours.
- Identify the key. The VIN, make, model, and year narrow down the blank and the chip.
- Cut or order the key. A blade is cut to the lock, or a smart key is prepared.
- Program it to the car. A programming tool connects to the diagnostic port and adds the new key to the immobilizer.
- Remove the lost keys. On most vehicles, the old keys are removed from the car's memory.
- Test everything. Start the engine several times, then check the doors, trunk, and remote buttons.
Manufacturers set the rules for this step, and they aren't all the same. Mazda's 2026 CX-70 manual says a replacement key requires security validation, which can add delay, and that you bring all remaining keys to an authorized dealer for the reset (Mazda USA).
That doesn't mean every car is a dealer job. We handle most makes at your car. A few take longer or need extra steps, and we'll tell you which kind yours is on the first call.
Customers notice the difference when the work comes to them. One wrote, "Came to me late night and made me a key that no one else was able to, thank you!!" (Emily C., Google review, March 2026).
Locksmith or dealer: which one fits your situation?
With no spare key, Ford says you must visit a dealer in person with ID and proof of ownership, and the car may need to be towed. A mobile locksmith does the work where the car is parked. Ford adds that a dealer may recommend a locksmith if it can't duplicate the key.
Both can solve an all-keys-lost problem. The difference is where the work happens and how much hauling is involved.
| Mobile locksmith | Dealer | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the work happens | At your car, wherever it's parked | At the dealership |
| Does the car need a tow? | Usually not | Often, if the car won't start |
| Ownership check | Photo ID plus proof of ownership | Photo ID plus proof of ownership |
| Makes covered | Most makes, with a few exceptions | Their own brand only |
| Best when | The car is stuck at home, work, or the beach | The make needs a dealer-only procedure |
We come to the car anywhere we serve in Kent and Sussex County, so you don't have to move it. If your car is stuck in a driveway in Georgetown or a beach lot in Bethany, a locksmith who comes to you removes the tow from the equation. If your make needs a dealer-only procedure, you'll know that after one phone call.
Will your old lost keys still work?
No, not for starting the car. On most vehicles, programming a new key removes the lost keys from the car's memory, so a found key can't start the engine. Mazda's 2026 CX-70 manual describes a dealer reset of the remaining keys and the immobilizer, and says to bring every remaining key. Ask your locksmith to confirm this for your make.
Some makes reach the same result by a different route. Volkswagen's tech tip, covered above, has the control module replaced so the car gets a new immobilizer identity, which VW says eliminates the security vulnerabilities created by the missing keys. Either way, the goal is the same: a key you lost shouldn't be able to start your car again.
That's the part most people worry about, and it's one reason all-keys-lost jobs include a removal step. Before the job ends, ask your locksmith how the lost keys are removed on your car and how you can tell it worked.
If your question is about a dead battery or a fob that needs re-pairing, that's a different problem. Our key fob replacement guide covers it.
Does car insurance cover lost car keys?
Usually not. According to Insurance.com, updated in July 2026, comprehensive coverage applies when a key is damaged in a covered loss such as a fire or vandalism, but it does not pay simply because the key disappeared, and a deductible applies. Check your own policy before you pay anyone.
Plymouth Rock makes a similar point: most policies don't cover lost keys, though some insurers sell key coverage as an add-on, and roadside help may cover a lockout or tow but not the key itself.
So what should you do? Call your agent before you pay anyone. If your keys were stolen along with a bag or a vehicle, the theft claim is a different story, so say so when you call.
Can a mobile locksmith reach you in your Delaware town?
Yes. Lock and Key Locksmith is a mobile locksmith based in Georgetown serving Kent and Sussex County. Delaware's HB 351, signed and effective July 23, 2026, adds 21 Del. C. section 6711 on key programming and relay devices, with an exemption for "a locksmith company" using them for a lawful and reasonable purpose (Delaware General Assembly bill text).
That coverage includes Georgetown, Milton, Seaford, Laurel, Dover, Lewes, and Bethany Beach.
Ownership checks matter for the same reason the law exists. Nationally, vehicle thefts fell by about 190,000, to 659,880 in 2025 from 850,708 in 2024, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau figures reported by The Shop Magazine. A locksmith who asks for ID isn't being difficult. They're keeping your car yours.
