A typical commercial keypad entry situation starts with someone who needs controlled access to an office, storage room, garage, or multi-tenant business area. A manager or facilities person will call because employees can't get in, codes have been lost, a keypad is physically damaged, or a building is being rekeyed for security. The scene is usually a single door with a metal or aluminum frame, often an exterior steel door or a heavy wood core door with a mortise lock or cylindrical lock. You'll commonly see keypads paired with electric strikes, maglocks, or exit devices such as Von Duprin or LCN. There may be visible wiring at the jamb or a small metal box near the ceiling for power and control. Our van carries the tools and parts so we can work on site without asking anyone to bring hardware to a location.
On site we first confirm ownership or authorization and look over the installed hardware. We test the existing keypad and the locking device, checking power to the unit and any backup batteries. If a code change, we put the keypad into programming mode and update or clear codes per the manufacturer's procedure for units like Schlage, Sargent, or Yale. If the keypad is damaged we remove the bezel and inspect switches, circuit board, and the strike or maglock wiring. For electric strikes we check the strike plate alignment and the striker lip; for maglocks we verify mounting and the condition of the armature plate. We rewire or replace failed components, program user codes, and test the door under normal operation before we move on.
What makes a job simple or awkward is largely the hardware condition, the door and frame alignment, and electrical access. A straightforward job is a working keypad with accessible wiring, a properly aligned strike, and a standard cylindrical or mortise lock where replacement parts are available. It gets awkward when the frame is bent, the strike pocket is misaligned, the door has non-standard reinforcement, or the installed keypad is discontinued and uses proprietary parts. Low-voltage wiring runs can be cut or bundled in inaccessible conduits, and some installations require routing new wiring through walls or conduit that are difficult to access. Old exit devices or custom panic hardware, and doors with glass transoms or reinforced metal plates, add complexity and may require more time on site to fit or adapt parts.
When we finish, the customer has a working keypad entry with the programmed codes and any replaced parts installed and secured. We leave the door operating as intended, test all user codes we were asked to set, and verify that the strike or maglock releases and secures reliably. Before leaving we check battery backups, make sure wiring is dressed and secured, and confirm the door closes and latches properly under normal conditions. We walk through operation with the authorized contact, hand over any code lists or instructions for future programming, and make a note of any recommended follow-up work if the opening needs further adjustment or retrofit. We operate from our mobile van and do not offer a location for drop-offs or in-person visits.
