Ignition Repair in Kent & Sussex County, DE
The first sign that a vehicle needs ignition repair is that something about the key or the column no longer feels right. You may have a key that wiggles in the ignition, a key that will not turn, a key that is stuck and will not come out, or a vehicle that will not start even when the key seems to be doing the right thing. Sometimes there is visible wear on the key blade or the ignition cylinder shows scratches or metal shavings. Other times the problem is electrical: a dead ignition switch or a worn connector that interrupts the starter circuit. Drivers often describe intermittent starts, grinding when turning the key, or a key that needs a lot of force. These are the practical signs we look for when we arrive.
On site we begin with a clear inspection of the ignition cylinder, the key, and the steering column area. We test the original key for wear and check any chip or transponder with a scan tool if the vehicle has one. If the cylinder is worn we can remove the steering column cover and extract the ignition barrel, replacing it or rekeying it to the customer's existing key as required. When the issue is electrical we access the ignition switch and associated connectors, testing continuity and voltage before replacing the switch or repairing a terminal. We work from our van, using hand tools, pin kits, tumblers, replacement cylinders, and diagnostic equipment to restore operation on site.
Whether a job is straightforward or awkward depends on the hardware and the vehicle construction. Older vehicles with simple mechanical ignition barrels and standard metal keys are usually easier because the cylinder can be removed and either repaired or swapped for a replacement. Newer cars with integrated ignition switches, immobilizer transponders, or push-button start systems can be more complex. Some vehicles require programming of a transponder or key fob to match the immobilizer module, and some columns are tightly packaged with airbag or steering angle sensors that limit access. Rusted bolts, damaged keyways, or aftermarket restraints can also add difficulty. We assess these factors before proceeding and explain the practical implications to the customer.
When the work is complete the customer is left with a functioning ignition assembly and a key or keys that operate the vehicle as intended. If we replace the barrel we test the new cylinder with the customer's key and any spare keys. If we do a rekey we confirm each provided key turns cleanly and removes without force. For electrical repairs we verify the starter engages, the dashboard indicators behave correctly, and any immobilizer or security lights reset. Before we leave we tidy the work area, secure any removed parts, and demonstrate operation to the driver so they can see how the key and ignition behave. We carry the necessary tools and parts in our van and handle the entire job at your vehicle.
