Residential Locksmith in Kent & Sussex County, DE

Residential work covers lock rekey, lock repair, lock replacement, home unlock service, smart lock installation, mailbox keys — all of it done at your address across all fifty towns we cover.

People call for residential locksmith work for a few common reasons. They might need a lock rekeyed after moving into a new house, a broken deadbolt repaired after a failed lock turn, or a homeowner locked out of their front door. Others want a mailbox key replaced or a new smart lock installed to use keypad codes or a phone app. When someone calls from anywhere in Kent County or Sussex County we treat the situation as a practical problem: secure the home, restore access, or update hardware so it functions as the homeowner expects. We explain the options on the phone, and then work on the job at the customer's house rather than at a shop.

On site we diagnose the specific hardware and use the appropriate tools and parts. Rekeying means removing the lock cylinder, changing the pins or tumblers, and cutting a new key so that old keys no longer fit. Repair work can include replacing broken latches, tightening or aligning the strike plate, or swapping out worn internal parts in a Kwikset, Schlage, Yale, or similar lock. For a full replacement we remove the old lock and fit a new deadbolt or knob set, making sure the hole in the door and the strike on the frame line up. For a home unlock we pick or bypass the lock with non-destructive methods when possible, and for mailbox keys we either cut a new key or replace the lock cylinder.

Some jobs are straightforward and others are awkward because of the existing hardware, door condition, and the way a house was built. A standard 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" backset deadbolt in a square door with a solid jamb is straightforward to rekey or replace. Problems arise when the door has damage, an oblong or misaligned mortise, an aftermarket metal security plate that hides fasteners, or when a lock is rusted and seized. Older mortise locks, laminated doors, aluminum storm doors, or non-standard sized holes require extra care. Mailboxes with non-standard cores or security screws can be tricky. Weather-swollen wood, warped doors, and doors with glass panels limit what we can do without additional carpentry or replacement parts.

Before we leave we check the function of the lock and the door in regular use. We make sure keys operate smoothly, the deadbolt throws and retracts, the latch engages the strike plate, and any keypad or smart lock is enrolled and communicating with the homeowner's device if that service was requested and compatible. We test the door closed and latched, check that any trim is secure, and hand over all keys and any new user codes or instructions for the smart lock. The customer is left with working hardware, the keys or codes they asked for, and a short explanation of what we did and any follow-up parts that might be advisable.
