A typical call for a smart lock installation starts with a homeowner who wants keys to be simpler to manage, to replace a failing electronic deadbolt, or to add remote access for family members. Often the customer has already bought a unit such as an August Smart Lock, Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, Kwikset Halo, or an Ultraloq, and they want it fitted to a specific door. Sometimes they want a whole-house upgrade to match existing hardware. We arrive in our van with the tools and parts we commonly use for residential work. We work on-site in Georgetown and throughout Kent and Sussex Counties, and we carry the workshop in the van because we do not operate from a retail counter or shop.
On site we start by assessing the door and the existing lock. We test the current deadbolt and latch, check the borehole size, and verify the backset and strike plate alignment. If a customer provides a smart lock, we confirm the model and that we have compatible screws, mounting plates, and batteries on hand. We remove the old lock hardware, prepare the door edge and face if needed, fit the new mounting plate and deadbolt assembly, and install the interior module and keypad or thumbturn. For battery-powered units we install fresh batteries and pair the lock to the customer's phone or hub per the manufacturer's instructions, and we show the homeowner basic operation before we leave.
Whether an installation is straightforward or awkward depends on three main things: the lock hardware, the door, and site constraints. Standard municipal or residential doors with a 2 1/8-inch bore and common backset values suit most Schlage, Yale, and Kwikset smart deadbolts without modification. An older door with an undersized bore, a narrow stile, or a non-standard backset can require drilling, a different mounting plate, or a longer spindle. Heavily reinforced or metal doors, glass panel doors, and doors with existing multipoint locks are often more complex. The layout around the door also matters; if a neighbor's porch or steps restrict access for our ladder and van tools, we adapt our approach but that can make the job take more careful work.
When we finish, the customer gets a tested, working smart lock with basic user accounts or codes set up and simple instructions on how to operate and maintain it. We walk through locking and unlocking with the app, keypad, and physical key, and confirm the deadbolt throws smoothly from both sides. We check the strike plate alignment, door swing, and that the latch does not bind or rub. We secure any exposed wiring or loose screws, restore paint or trim only where necessary, and remove our debris and packaging from the property. Before leaving we make sure the homeowner knows how to replace batteries and how to contact us from Georgetown if they have follow-up questions. Our phone is (302) 271-0155.
