A home unlock situation usually looks like a person standing on the porch holding a handful of keys that don't fit or a single key that just snapped in the lock. Often the deadbolt is engaged and the knob lock is separate, or a sliding glass door is latched and the throw bolt is inaccessible. Sometimes occupants locked the door behind them with a key left on the counter, or a child closed the door from the inside. Other times the key turns but won't retract the bolt because the cylinder is worn, or an electronic keypad or smart lock has no power. The scene can include weather, a sleeping household, or packages at the door, and our first step is to assess the actual barrier we're facing.

On site we work methodically and explain each step to the resident. We confirm proof of residency, then inspect the door, frame, and lock to choose the least invasive option. For standard pin-tumbler knobs and deadbolts we try mechanical entry with picks and tension tools to manipulate the cylinder. If a key is broken we use extractors to remove the shaft. For cylinder locks we may remove the cylinder to open the door without damaging the lock, and for malfunctioning smart locks we check batteries and mechanical bypass options before touching electronics. If the lock or cylinder is too damaged to reuse we remove and replace the cylinder or the lock body, and we keep the homeowner informed about what parts are needed.

Whether the job is straightforward or awkward depends on the hardware, the door construction, and any electronic systems involved. Simple jobs are usually standard Schlage, Kwikset, or Baldwin pin-tumbler cylinders on a solid wood door with a square-lipped jamb. Awkward jobs involve high-security cylinders such as Medeco or Mul-T-Lock with restricted keyways, mortise or multipoint locks that anchor at multiple points, aluminum storm doors with small gaps, or doors with heavy security plates. Fiberglass or metal doors with tight stiles, warped frames from humidity, or glass sidelights make access harder. If a smart lock, keypad, or vehicle key fob is involved, the electrical and programming side may limit mechanical options and require different handling.

When the job is done we make sure the homeowner can operate the locking hardware before we leave. That includes testing the latch and deadbolt throw several times, checking that keys turn smoothly in any new or rekeyed cylinder, and verifying that any electronic keypad or smart lock powers up and responds if we touched it. We also inspect the door frame and strike plate for damage, realign the strike if needed, and replace any screws we removed. Finally we tidy the work area, leave any new keys that were cut, explain what we did and any follow-up recommendations, and confirm the resident is satisfied with the lock operation.
